Dear Friends and Supporters,
Blair Holt was shot to death at the age of 16. He was riding the bus home from school when a young man entered the bus and began firing a pistol. Blair turned from his seat and shielded a female classmate from the bullets. Neither Blair, nor the young lady, was the intended target. The young man who killed Blair was 16; he will spend most of his life in prison.
I met Blair five years ago while coaching soccer. A bright smile and a warm heart, he was loved by peers, teachers, and parents. He was a good kid from a good family. Yet his family, as well as over 50 families in Chicago, had to bury a child due to gun violence over the last 2 years. (35 other students in Chicago were killed in 2007, 24 students in 2008) Several of these children, like Blair, were from Roseland.
This is not the way God’s Kingdom is supposed to be. Children are supposed to smile in safety and flourish in the fun of developing their gifts. Children are not supposed to be gunned down by other children. This is not the way God’s Kingdom is supposed to be.
One attempt Roseland Christian Ministries has made to represent God’s Kingdom is providing safe opportunities where God’s children flourish. Our best effort is our Summer Day Camp. For five weeks, 100 low-income children from Roseland will attend Summer Day Camp. This includes breakfast, lunch, five field trips, Bible, dance, recreation, music, and arts classes. Adult leaders run Summer Day Camp, but are assisted by 20 teens from Roseland. The teens are paid a stipend and are given an alternative to gangs and guns. Young children smiling and playing in safety, teens developing their gifts-we believe this is the way God’s Kingdom is supposed to be.
We hope that you will stand with God’s children in Roseland.
The matter is urgent. We need your prayers and support.
Peace,
Joe Huizenga
If you are able to pray and give, here are some options to consider:
• Any amount of prayer and gift
• $50 gift (one day-camper’s fee)
• $200 gift (one teenage worker’s salary for one week at summer day camp)
• $1,000 gift (one teenage worker’s salary for four weeks, and four day camper’s fees for 5 weeks)
• $500,000 gift (just take care of Summer Day Camp for the next 10 plus years this is called Rev. Tony humor)
